di paperino - Prenzlauer Berg

Gleimstrasse 15, 10437 Berlin

An Italian Salumeria and Panetteria with potential, run by a delightful gentleman. They carry bread, deli meat, cheese, wine, and assorted Italian goodies.

As the only place like it in the neighborhood, it’s a nice new resource.

However, being new, the stock is limited, which may end up being its downfall.

If you live nearby, poke your head in, say hi to the owner, and look around.

And if you need parmesan or salami, buy it here rather than at Kaiser’s. It would be nice to see the place succeed.

Jexy Hi!
I’m Jessica, I come from Italy and I’m searching a summer job in Berlin..
I saw your shop and I was guessing if you need staff from 10 July till the end of September..
Thank you for the attention,
Jessica!

Ponte Vecchio - Firenze

Ponte Vecchio, Firenze

22-10-2008

If you go to Florence, I suppose you have to cross the Ponte Vecchio or it won’t feel complete. But don’t get your hopes up, especially if you’re looking for jewelry. Go north or south a bridge and it becomes beautiful to look at. When you’re actually on it, watch your wallet. (From someone who lived in Florence for a year and visits frequently.)

I’m giving it 5 stars for its beauty from a distance. And some nice, teen, memories.

Il Gelato Vivoli - Firenze

Via Isola delle Stinche 7, 50122 Firenze

22-10-2008

This place was famous when I lived there in 1986, and was still going strong when I was there recently. However….and a big however….don’t pass the little guys by just to get here. Gelato is taken almost as seriously as espresso in Italy, and if you see machines in the background, and lovingly laid out bins of carefully sculpted gelato, don’t feel you have to rush to Vivoli. And as tourist-trappy as it may look, also consider Festival del Gelato, with something like 50 flavors. Or wait, am I thinking Baskin-Robbins? :) Anyway, both are great, as are many of the smaller places. Look for the machine. If you see them actually adding fresh ingredients, cancel all plans and order immediately.

San Sebastián - Donostia - San Sebastián

centre ville, San Sebastián

22-10-2008

5 stars from me. It’s a full-fledged city, yet has a beautiful, crescent-shaped beach with an old-style promenade along it’s entire length, and is reputed to have the best tapas (or pinxhos) in Spain. The old town is somewhat touristy, but if you go in September, as we did, not overwhelmingly so. There are still shops selling normal groceries, household goods, etc. Probably in its last few years of partial under-the-radar-ness. Go while the going is still good.

I understand there’s an airport, but I think it’s quite small. Catching a bus from Bilbao is a breeze. They run hourly, and the trip is just over an hour. Coming down from Biarritz, or in from Pau, would also be options.

Museo Chillida Leku - Hernani

Barrio Jauregi 66, 20120 Hernani

22-10-2008

I just returned from Spain, where we saw Chillida sculptures everywhere, particularly in the north. This was an eye-opener, as I only learned about him a few years ago, while staying with friends in St. Jean-de-Luz, in France, about 20 minutes north of the Spanish border. Luckily, at that time, my friend’s father practically forced my friend’s wife and I to go down to Spain to the Chillida sculpture garden. So I knew them when I saw them. (I’ll add some pictures in the future.)

I’m actually not a huge fan of abstract sculpture, but the space is beautiful and when you can see all of his work in one place, it clicks.

If you are in Bilbao for the Guggenheim, or in the area for any other reason, I strongly recommend spending an hour or two at this museum.

Note: It’s not terribly easy to find. Get directions in advance.

Barcomi's Deli - Mitte

Sophienstr. 21, Barcomi's GmbH, 10178 Berlin

07-01-2008 (atualizado em 22-10-2008)

Great chocolate and regular cheesecake. This “deli” offers bagels, american-style sandwiches and traditional American pastries. Hidden a bit in a hof (watch for the small sign hanging in front of the streetside entrance to the hof ), the space is pleasant, though a bit crowded. My impression was that a lot of people consider this a “special find”, which kind of negates the idea, if you see what I mean.

AlfredoTheBarkingMule The cakes and pastries and pies at Barcomi's are delicious, but I found the bagels to be a big disappointment, as is the case with all bagels in Berlin: they're baked, not boiled in water like REAL bagels and therefore taste like fluffy whitebread with holes in the middle.

I love Barcomi's a lot, but the big draw there are the cakes, cookies, pastries and pies. I also find that their coffee drinks are not that special.

Still: if you're an American like me, it's pretty cool to find rockin' cinnamon rolls and pies in the heart of Berlin !

ebarcomi Dear AlfredoTheBarkingMule,

Thank you for your visit and taking the time to write a comment on Qype. But may I correct you, we do boil our bagels in water and roll every single bagel by hand.

Best wishes,
Your Barcomi’s Team

Kreuzburger - Prenzlauer Berg

Pappelallee 19, Ecke Raumerstraße, 10437 Berlin

20-10-2008

I would reallly like to give it a 3.5. The Neuland meat is tasty (but also available at several other burger places.) However, this place pulls the whole burger deal together better than many others.

I’m American, and almost as picky about my burgers as my Mexican food, so I can’t go crazy over simply avoiding screwing things up terribly, and that’s about where I’m landing. (Also, I was there while most of their food supplies were being delivered, so I’m under no delusions about hand-cut fries, fresh buns, or the like). Hence 3, not 4, stars.

There are 5 or 6 indoor tables, clean, pleasant counter staff, 4 types of fries, lots of options for burgers. Gouda as the cheese, but oh well: “Cheddar’s a bad cheese,” as I was told by a waiter at a supposedly American restaurant here. :) Basically, a good resource for a burger in P-burg. I’ve added times and website above.

They also have hot dogs, salads, “burritos” (don’t get your hopes up) and snacks like chicken wings and mozzarella sticks. And Ben + Jerry’s. (I brought the menu home…not just an observant eye.)

Still water, Neuland CB with extra käse, and curly fries came to 8.10 EUR.

Also, while adding some place info, I noticed they deliver free with an 8,00 EUR order, from 12.00-22.00, and are open very late. 02.45 Sun-Thurs, 04.00 Fri. and Sat! Nice alternative if you’ve been bar hopping in the area and want something other than a döner (sorry, can’t do umlauts).

Air Berlin PLC & Co. Luftverkehrs KG - Charlottenburg

Saatwinkler Damm 42-43, 13627 Berlin

Just flew with AirBerlin to Barcelona, my first trip with them. Isolated as I am from German media (lack of language skills and lack of media consumption), I thought they were a budget carrier. They certainly have prices that imply that. But both flights were excellent. On time, pleasant staff, good planes. In fact, the return flight was downright modern. They do charge for almost every little thing (meals, headphones, etc.), but not over the top. I’m a bit excited having finally realized what they are -- as always, I’m late to the game -- and will be studying their route map. Flying out of Tegel is a huge plus, as well.

bluesofty It’s German, what did you expect??

Museo Guggenheim (Museum) - Bilbau

Abandoibarra Et. 2, 48001 Bilbao

20-09-2008

I have been twice, and am not sure whether I should review the building or the contents. The permanent Serra exhibition itself merits 5 stars. The space in which the pieces are exhibited was designed specifically for the works, and to see them from above is a huge bonus. Rotating exhibits from the Guggenheim’s massive collection, as well as exclusive temporary exhibits, have to be judged individually.

The building itself is stunning. Pictures don’t do it justice, as they can’t capture the way the metal skin works with the ever changing light.

With the addition of Calatrava’s pedestrian bridge and airport terminal, Bilbao is definitely a worthwhile destination for any design or architecture fan.

Do try to line up early, as the museum is small and the lines can get long. If you’re mostly interested in the architecture, go on a Monday outside of the summer season, when it’s closed. Fewer people blocking your shots.

Kino Intimes - Friedrichshain

Boxhagener Straße 107, 10245 Berlin

A nice spot on a cold day. The casual, wood interior feels warm and is a perfect setting for a cappucino. Service is good.
