The Hill - Belsize Park

94 Haverstock Hill, London NW3 2BD

17-06-2009 (atualizado em 19-06-2009)

This gastropub on the edge of Belsize Park is adorned with chandeliers, gold leaf, dark wood and velvet fittings. Sounds possibly a little grotesque, but it offers a homely, relaxd atmosphere. Real ale, plenty of wine to choose from and the food is good. It’s modern British menu; not especially cheap (main courses are between £12-£19), but, quite unbelievably, they offer a glass of wine and a main for £10 from Mon-Thur. Credit crunch-tastic.
Often a celeb or two to be spotted, and a garden out the back.
You could definitely do worse than to spend an evening here. Especially mid-week.

Princess Of Wales - Primrose Hill

22 Chalcot Road, London NW1 8LL

17-06-2009

aljwoods is right when he says this is a great pub. It’s one of the least pretentious in the area. It feels more like a locals pub than The Lansdowne or The Engineer, which are just metres away. Great beers on too, and the live music is certainly a draw. The only problem with it is that it’s just so BRIGHT!

Jamon Jamon - Camden

38 Parkway, London NW1 7AH

30-10-2008

I seem to have had an entirely different experience from Madameso. I’ve only eaten here twice, but have had extremely friendly service on both occasions. Notably so. Admittedly it hasn’t been that prompt, but amiable all the same.

I particularly like the retractable roof in summer and the restaurant has quite a relaxed, chilled-out feel.

There’s a fairly comprehensive tapas menu, and while the food isn’t amazing, it’s not bad either. It’s reasonably priced, too, think I spent £15 for a selection of tapas, wine and beer.

Good, not great. But that’s fine by me.

The Lansdowne - Primrose Hill

90 Gloucester Avenue, Primrose Hill, London NW1 8HX

23-09-2008 (atualizado em 03-10-2008)

This pub is definitely the posers’ pick of Primrose Hill. In fact I frequently conduct a wanker-count from my window. Yesterday it easily exceeded 15 and that was only covering the four tables it has outside. Silly hats and sunglasses inside. And the worst thing is the clientele don’t all seem to be in there by accident – it’s definitely a destination. Friday and Saturday evenings see huge numbers paying over the odds to enjoy the pleasure of sitting on the kerb outside.

It’s pricey as you’d expect from the location, and after shelling out in excess of £15 for the house wine, I’d expect a nice glass to drink it from. Unfortunately they provide you with those squat little things you’d be more likely drink concentrated urine out of in a Chinese restaurant. Upsetting.

That said, I’m quite taken by the unassuming faded faience that presents itself to the street; and the shabby interior populated with big wooden tables and mismatched furniture does give it a relaxed and homely feel. The food is fairly good – standard gastro fare with a pizza menu too (£11-£16, beware: the bases are invariably burnt). There’s also a proper restaurant upstairs for more formal dining.

I do have a certain fondness for this place, but the only time you’d catch me in there would be for a quiet midweek or daytime drink. And certainly not for long enough to have to go to the horrible loo any more than once.

Andrew Hunter Thanks for the wanker count stats. I think Qype needs this attribute!

Cafe Maroush - Marylebone

68 Edgware Road, Marylebone, London W2 2EG

23-09-2008

After a trip to Syria earlier this year during which every single Syrian we met, on learning we were from London, asked if we had eaten at the amazing Lebanese restaurant, Maroush, on Edgware Road, I was expecting great things. Unfortunately it didn’t quite deliver.

The selection and quality of mezze was really good, if fairly expensive. The biggest dissapointment was the abysmal service. Despite having a huge amount of staff - some rearranging plates on unused tables; a fair few wandering around avoiding catching anyone’s eye; one to ask if you were ready to order, but not take it; one to ask to ask another one to bring you a drinks menu - it took an absolute age to get any kind of service out of them.

I would return to one of the other Maroush restaurants to give it another chance, and hope they were just having an off day, though despite what the Syrian’s say, I’d rather find somewhere without the overly inflated prices for the 'novelty’ of having Middle Eastern food. And somewhere that you can be in and out in under three hours.

The Albert - Primrose Hill

11 Princess Road, Primrose Hill, London NW1 8JR

16-01-2008

The Albert is one of the more unassuming pubs in Primrose Hill and consequently isn't overcrowded with tiresome types as are its Gloucester Avenue counterparts. It offers decent pub fayre at reasonable prices, especially given its location, and it's cosy, relaxed atmosphere make it an ideal drinking spot midweek.

The Reliance Bar & Dining Room - Leeds

76 North Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS2 7PN

14-01-2008

The Reliance is easily one of the best bars in Leeds. It is exactly how I would want a bar to be. Its single-paned, curved floor to ceiling glass facade is certainly impressive, and its collection of mismatching furniture - worn old sofas and distressed wooden tables - ensure a comfortable, relaxed feel. Shabby chic, but without any pretense whatsoever. The staff are friendly, the food is great, and the drinks selection is top notch. A perfect place to while away an afternoon, or evening. Or both.
